What Is Dual-Focus Relationship Therapy?

Relationships are intricate—shaped by the individual needs, emotions, and life experiences of each partner, and by the unique dynamic they form together. In every couple I work with, I’m attuned to three “clients”: Partner 1, Partner 2, and the Couple.

Dual-Focus Relationship Therapy was created to address all three and be used in pre-engagement, pre-marital, and marital counseling.

By blending individual and joint sessions, this approach helps each person feel seen and supported, while also fostering connection, healing, and growth in the relationship itself.

How It Works Dual-Focus Therapy Works

Dual-Focus Relationship Therapy offers flexible, customized session formats to match your relationship’s evolving needs:

  • Split Focus: 15 minutes with each partner individually, followed by 30 minutes together.

  • Individual Intensive: 30 minutes with each partner to explore deeper personal challenges.

  • Joint Focus: The full hour devoted to working together as a couple.

This adaptable structure allows us to address individual concerns in a safe, private setting while also supporting shared goals like emotional intimacy, communication, and reconnection.

Why This Approach Works

Couples counseling can feel vulnerable. One partner may worry about being blamed; the other may fear not being heard. That’s why the structure of Dual-Focus Relationship Therapy is so powerful—it builds trust while lowering defenses.

By combining individual and couple work, you’ll benefit from:

  • Three-Fold Insight: Understanding each partner as an individual and as part of the couple.

  • Private Space for Honesty: Individual time allows concerns to surface without fear of conflict.

  • Deeper Emotional Work: Sessions uncover root issues—often buried beneath patterns of silence, defensiveness, or reactivity.

  • Shared Growth: Progress made individually is integrated into the couple’s journey forward.

What to Expect In Sessions

This therapy is supportive, paced for safety, and responsive to your relationship’s unique rhythms. My goal is to help you move from disconnection and confusion to insight, trust, and emotional closeness.

Together, we’ll work on:

  • Identifying the root causes of emotional disconnection

  • Learning healthy, effective communication

  • Developing tools for conflict resolution

  • Rebuilding trust after betrayal

  • Understanding how past wounds and personal struggles impact the relationship

Rebuilding After Infidelity or Major Betrayals

Few wounds cut as deeply as betrayal. Whether through infidelity, emotional disloyalty, or long-standing broken trust, couples often feel lost in the aftermath.

Dual-Focus Relationship Therapy, grounded in both trauma-informed care and Gottman Method principles, offers a structured, compassionate process for healing. If both partners are committed to the work, repair is not only possible—it can lead to a stronger foundation than before.

We’ll focus on:

  • Making space for grief, anger, and emotional honesty

  • Understanding the underlying reasons behind the betrayal

  • Restoring emotional safety and transparent communication

  • Rebuilding empathy, accountability, and trust

Whether you’re fighting to stay together or simply longing to feel close again, Dual-Focus Relationship Therapy offers a path forward. Healing doesn’t happen overnight, but with the right support, insight, and commitment, change is possible.
You don’t have to have it all figured out before starting. Therapy isn’t about being “ready” in a perfect way—it’s about being open to healing and connection.
If you’re ready to take the next step—or even just wondering if it’s the right step—I’d be honored to walk that path with you.
